Robert B. Cohen is an economist and technology analyst who has focused on business use of virtual worlds. For Athena Alliance, he wrote the recent White Paper, “Virtual Worlds and the Transformation of Business.” In a recent consulting project for a client, he completed 25 additional interviews with business end users to document business value of VWs. Dr. Cohen has worked on the economic benefits of business use of grid computing. He is on the Open Grid Forum’s steering committee and was General Chair for the 2008 Street Grid Conference on Wall Street. He has also been a telecom market analyst and consultant for the last 20 years and is a fellow at the Economic Strategy Institute, a Washington think tank.

Dr. Cohen has done economic forecasts that examine the benefits and changes involved with adopting new technologies. In several forecasts, he employed input-output models to evaluate how substantially widespread grid computing adoption would change the US, North Carolina and California economies. He also studied grid computing adoption in businesses in Japan and Europe.

Dr. Cohen developed New York’s high tech policy for Governor Cuomo and served as secretary of the state’s High Tech Council. He was economic advisor to President George H.W. Bush's National Advisory Commission on Semiconductors. Dr. Cohen has taught at NYU’s Stern School of Business, the City University of New York, Cooper Union, and Columbia University. He is a past president of the Forecasters Club of New York. Dr. Cohen holds an MA and Ph.D. in economics from the New School for Social Research in New York and a BA from Swarthmore College. He is the co-author of several books on technology and trade policy.
